Medical Records
Institute's
Center for Cell Phone Applications in Healthcare
The Center for Cell Phone Applications in Healthcare (C-PAC) is Medical
Records Institute’s platform for studying and advocating
the development and adoption of cell phone technologies
for use in healthcare.
MRI envisions the development of a wide range of healthcare
applications on cell phones and cites them as the future
conduit of interoperability for essential health information.
C-PAC, as the natural successor to the Mobile Healthcare
Alliance (MoHCA), will work with developers to encourage
and coordinate these developments.
How the Cell Phone will Benefit Healthcare
- Cell phone and smart phone users can store their personal
health information safely and securely on their phone
in order to share it with authorized healthcare professionals
when healthcare services are needed.
- Specific software can provide preferred and easy communication
between healthcare providers, patients, payers, pharmacists,
and others, facilitating medication reminders for patients,
appointment scheduling, easy emergency calling, and
other functions.
- The cell phone can serve as the platform for consumer
health-related software such as wellness-related programs
and disease management programs. A wealth of functions
related to diseases ranging from asthma to diabetes,
from smoking cessation to general pediatric applications,
are currently being developed and tested.
- Offering consumers health-related Internet access,
cell phones can allow a patient to quickly and easily
look up information about medication or symptoms of
their health status. Imagine a patient looking
up a specific medication after it has been prescribed
at a clinic visit, noting it interacts with another
of their medications that they failed to mention during
their visit, and alerting the clinic physician –
also via the cell phone - before having the prescription
filled.
- Cell phones can be very efficient tools for medical
research, enabling patient data to be transmitted easily
and instantaneously to authorized, pre-programmed research
centers.
The range of applications currently under development
includes various divisions of medical services such as
emergency medicine, where technicians enter relevant data
into a unit and send it wirelessly to the emergency department
before arriving there with the patient.
Timeline
The technology necessary for many of the cell phone applications
in healthcare is already available through new functionalities,
and industry-specific platforms are being developed.
C-PAC envisions early adoption of these mobile applications
will continue to expand, with mainstream adoption in 2009.

The Role C-PAC Will Play
As many related standards and much collaboration are needed,
MRI’s C-PAC will act as a clearinghouse and collaboration
center in regard to cell phone technologies in healthcare.
The upcoming TEPR+ conference will be the main meeting
point for developers, users, vendors, carriers, and the
healthcare community at large.
We now offer membership opportunities for C-PAC. For more information on the different types of membership and fees, view the following application: Membership Information Center for Cell Phone Applications in Healthcare
